By now, you’re probably already aware of the possibilities offered by CBD for the treatment of a wide variety of diseases and health conditions. In this article, we cover some of the potentially life-changing properties of CBD and how it has affected my own life.
CBD or cannabidiol is the primary active ingredient in CBD or hemp oil and similar products. It is only one of several cannabinoid molecules that come from the cannabis plant. Of the many cannabinoids present in cannabis, CBD is the most abundant after Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
The particular cannabinoids found in cannabis plants are known as “phytocannabinoids”, “Phyto” being the Greek word for “plant”. They are especially valued for their ability to interact with the cannabinoid receptors that partially comprise the body’s endocannabinoid system.
THC is the primary psychoactive component in cannabis. Even though it has some medical value, CBD is often preferable for many reasons. It does not have any intoxicating effects, for one thing, and it shows tremendous promise in the treatment of many illnesses and health conditions.
With so many cannabinoids present in cannabis, why is CBD especially valued for its life-changing properties?
Some of the illnesses and health conditions that CBD therapy aims to address are quite severe and debilitating. Some of them even have the potential to affect the lives of sufferers adversely to a considerable degree. By easing the symptoms of these conditions and even reversing them, CBD can be a life-changing addition to a holistic healthcare and treatment program.
CBD is believed to have neuroprotective properties. It is also an anti-inflammatory agent as well as an analgesic. CBD may even be beneficial for the treatment of motivational disorders such as anxiety, depression, and substance dependence.
Many of these benefits are supported by in vitro experiments and animal studies. Initial research also suggests that CBD could be an effective solution for certain types of epilepsy that are resistant to treatment. Studies are still ongoing to determine just how useful CBD is for the treatment of such conditions. Even so, the initial results are quite promising.
Of course, the benefits of CBD for relieving the symptoms of pain, inflammation, and even seizures, are well known. But perhaps the most appealing aspect of CBD-based treatment is that the primary ingredient itself does not cause intoxication. This quality makes CBD a feasible treatment alternative for people that would prefer not to deal with the intoxicating effects of THC in cannabis-based products.
So how exactly does CBD work? How does it provide life-changing benefits to people dealing with specific health issues and diseases?
The key to the effectiveness of CBD is its promiscuous pharmacology. This refers to CBD’s ability to affect several of the receptor systems in the system. This effect applies not only to the cannabinoid receptors in the brain and the body but many other receptors as well. In particular, CBD affects receptors in the brain and the serotonin system.
Receptors in the brain react to neurotransmitters that are naturally present, such as dopamine or serotonin. But they also react to external chemical messengers such as THC and CBD.
When you ingest a product containing CBD, the active compounds work their way through your bloodstream and eventually end up in the brain. When the compounds interact with the neuron receptors, they influence brain activity.
Even more promisingly, animal studies suggest that CBD may activate serotonin receptors present in the brain. This effect could hold the key to controlling drug-seeking behavior. It is also thought that the influence of CBD on the serotonin system may partly contribute to its ability to reduce anxiety. This result has been demonstrated in human as well as animal studies.
CBD has changed my life for the better in many significant ways. I had been suffering from anxiety disorder throughout most of my life and had been unable to find a lasting solution. I went through the entire gamut of pharmaceutical solutions, none of which provided any significant measure of relief.
Many of the anti-anxiety medications I tried seem to have brought about even more serious issues than they solved. I had just about given up hope when I chanced upon an article on the potential of CBD to treat anxiety-related disorders.
To be clear, I am not suggesting that CBD is the answer to all conditions–or even to conditions that have responded positively to CBD. But in the face of mounting evidence, it would be worth keeping a close watch on upcoming developments in the area of CBD research.
